When did you know that you were going to be a DJ; how early did you start playing records?
I never set out to be or knew I was going to be a DJ. It’s just something I did and I’ve never stopped. Basically it chose me! I didn’t choose it. I started dipping into my parents records and playing them at four years old.
Who were some of your major influences in life/music
Muhammed Ali & Sean Carter are definitely some life influences and as far as music goes I would say DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and J Dilla.
What was the first party you ever spun records at?
It was a club in Federal Way, Washington. I think it was called Maxims. I only got called in to play because their resident DJ got sick. I was terrible and had no idea how to rock a party. At that point I was only into scratching and cutting doubles up, not something club goers wish to hear.
How did you end up in Sir Mix A Lot’s video “Posse’s on Broadway?”
Mix and DJ Nasty Nes personally asked me to be in the video. I didn’t know back then how long these things took to shoot. I was there literally all day like 13 hours. I said forget it and was about to leave when they called me in for my part. When the video came out I’m in the part of the song where he says “Getting dirty looks from those other sucker crews”. I took it as a serious diss and thought they had that part for me in mind all along. I don’t know if they did or not but it’s all good these days. Me and Mix are friends….
Its well known that your record collection is over 40,000 how big do you plan on making your collection?
I never meant for it to be that big and in fact it’s not how many you have but what you have. I will probably even get rid of a lot and just keep what’s important to me. Nowadays most DJs use serato and mp3′s, I personally use both.
What is one rare record you would like to get your hands on?
People’s Pleasure with Alive & Well. I’ve seen it 3 times in my life but have yet to obtain a copy for myself. Someone hook me up!
If there was any party in the world you could play at, what one would it be?
Well to be honest, I’ve almost lived all of my dreams. I’ve done huge stadiums, NBA All Star parties, AVN Awards, Vegas Clubs, etc. There isn’t really one particular thing that stands out that comes to mind. As funny as it may seem I actually almost prefer smaller more intimate venues/events. You’re closer with the people and it’s a better vibe.
Whats next for Supreme La Rock’s music career?
This past month I played in San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, Canada & Minneapolis. I currently have the “Wheedles Groove” movie out on DVD and two more compilations with LITA Records as well as a project with Kenny Dope I’m hashing out. I’m definitely looking to do more remix/production work as well and my third collaboration shirt with TITS.
