Being a huge Jordan fan when I was young and quickly realizing that my 5’7″ frame wasn’t going to allow me to play in the NBA like I may have hoped when I was 7 years old, I landed more on the action sports side of things but was always engulfed in sneaker culture. It was a huge, bold move when Nike entered Skateboarding with Nike SB. A corporate giant in a dope, core culture like skate? Get the fuck out, right? Wrong, Nike SB killed it and paved the way for others to try. Other big brands have tried though and have still failed to really find that perfect formula, Adidas being one of those, but seeing this video from New Balance today gives me the hope that we can start to embrace more of these cultures and contribute to them rather letting them be stripped of character by corporate players. PJ Ladd was signed to DC Shoes while I was with the brand so to see him on the New Balance roster is quite a juxtaposition. Good luck New Balance, you’ll still need it.
